About The Creator—Matt Dursum – wayfarersoliloquy

Greetings! My name is Matt Dursum, the creator of wayfarersoliloquy.com. Here’s a little about me. I’m a writer, journalist, and surfer from the United States. I created this website to share fascinating stories about the food, wine, people, and cultures of the world’s coastal communities. If you love learning about culinary traditions, history, wine, or global surf culture, then this is the place for you. 

Who am I? 

Travel and food are my passions. My goal is to share these passions with other people through my favorite medium: writing. I guess you could say that I’m a small town kind of guy. My story starts in rural Michigan. I grew up in a modest household, in a modest town. Like most kids, I wanted to see what else was out there. At 14, my extended family invited me to visit them for the summer in Ireland.

As a nervous kid who had barely ventured outside his town, I began working 4AM shifts at a local bakery before school, saving for my tickets to Europe. In the summer, I nervously took my first flight abroad. Needless to say, the experience changed my life forever. Since then, I’ve lived in three states, four countries, and three continents. 

Naturally, traveling led me to discover my other passions in life: food, wine, and surfing. Like a snowball effect, these things have led me down an insatiable rabbit hole of curiosity that covers a wide range of disciplines like history, cultural anthropology, horticulture, linguistics, and geography. I later realized that my passions for telling stories could become a career. 

Now, on top of writing and editing for my website, I write for various magazines, blogs and companies. I’ve been published in over 15 print and digital publications. To see some of my published work, visit my other published work page.
